Built in 1886, the Wyoming State Capitol Building is a National Historic Landmark, one of 27 in the state. Realizing the need for a major overhaul of the structure, the Wyoming state government chose Aptitude for a massive five-year restoration project that involved the rebuilding and integration of building systems, life safety systems, digital services, and cellular and network infrastructures integration.
The project was driven by three goals — add and update life safety systems to meet current standards, replace aging building systems with state-of-the-art technologies and platforms for efficient building performance and operations, and upgrade various public access components and assets throughout Capitol Square to best facilitate visitor and occupant needs and improve public use and accessibility.
The project involved numerous rehabilitation and restoration tasks, as well as a new central utility plant, remodeling, and expansion of a tunnel that connects the 130,000 sq. ft. Capitol Building to Capitol Square’s primary office of operations.
Aptitude team members worked closely with key officials and trade partners to understand needs and set goals for the Square’s connectivity solution. To keep the project moving forward smoothly, they paid close attention to codes and regulations and selected the right trade partners. Throughout the design of the massive renovation, Aptitude kept in mind the importance of preserving the original awe-inspiring aesthetics of the National Historic Landmark. By employing creative design and install methods, Aptitude adhered to that preservation goal while reconfiguring the space to accommodate modern offices, state-of- the-art technologies and infrastructure, and improved public accessibility.
Aptitude installed and integrated security servers, a video wall, and other necessary equipment at the state’s Security Operations Center, where cameras and sensors in state-run facilities across Wyoming are monitored. The company designed and installed a robust fire alarm system with a smoke exhaust system to protect the historic structure from fire damage.
Perhaps the most daunting challenge of the project was its complex phasing. Aptitude worked closely with the numerous parties involved in each phase to keep existing systems up and running while designing, installing, and integrating additional systems, platforms, and components to create a fully connected built-environment for Capitol Square.
National Historic Landmark was brought up to code with state-of-the-art building systems and amenities that would ease the burden on the state and help residents of Wyoming to participate in government for years to come.
